Well is it???
Is it Balearic? Vol 10. Mixed by Timm Sure
Really pleased to be back after a lengthy hiatus (don't ask!?) with some really classy music. If this mix doesn't bring the sun out I'm not sure what will. Brought to you by one of the original Balearic stormtroopers; Timm Sure, from his residency at Nottinghams legendary Venus in'88 to his current DJ/Producer role as half of Coyote on his 'Is it Balearic?' label Tim has never waivered in his faith in all that is Balearic. Check the track listing here for a sweep of timeless quality from the vintage soul of Jose Feliciano to contempory dub disco from Smith & Mudd and Kathy Diamond to classic pop of ELO and It's Immaterial. If this is your cup of, then check Coyote's three recent EP's here, Timm has promised us a listen of Vol 4 when it's ready, watch out for a review here soon. Thanks to Timm for sharing this mix with the NFP, Enjoy.

loving it...
Smith & Mudd - Plot of Land
The prefix nu before jazz, disco or in this case balearic is irritating me right now. This is the perfect antidote. Forget the label. The clocks are back, the sun is out, lie back, and just let it wash over.

Into the Maelstrom!
Devilish Fun - Edits EP1 (Solardisco) Edited by Maelstrom
Solardisco is the new label from prolific disco edit guru and Glasgow DJ; Maelstrom. His edits and productions are getting into the record boxes and playlists of influential DJ's like Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and Pete Herbert. This Edits EP1 is a fine three tracker which get the label off to a screaming start, driving funk fuelled peak-time space disco, check Devillish Fun here at the NFP and buy the real thing here . Many thanks to Maelstrom sharing the music, nice one!

Rocky Reflections
Bill Conti - Reflections
Awesome deep, soporific funk from the 1976 Rocky soundtrack. This has had exposure on its fair share of funk compilations over the years - but remains a firm favourite.
Unlike the better known anthems from the film (you know, the ones that inspire you to get up early and eat raw eggs before a full day pounding meat), this has much more of a 4am vibe to it.
Well, this is insane..
William Burroughs and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - The Last Words of Dutch Schultz
Michael Franti and Rono Tse, the remarkable Charlie Hunter on guitar, and the voice of W S Burroughs..

Check Kumo

Marc Kets runs a great blog over at Kumo, based in Cape Town, South Africa. Passionate about his music, well written and with crisp design, he's been kind enough to say some nice things about the NFP in a recent post. We say thanks, and suggest you pay him a visit asap.

Lovemore Aussies...That's an order!
Canyons - Apples & Pears (Hole in the Sky 2008)
Aussie independent label Hole in the Sky, made a great impression with their first release; Fred Cherry's 'Bus Ride to the Zoo', a brilliant cut'n paste of funk, rock and psychedelia. Check it on their myspace and buy it here.
The super eclectic label starts the year with the excellent Lovemore E.P from Canyons, a slow-mo-disco four tracker of sure fire Balearic belters. Check 'Apples & Pears', (it's got to be my favourite track of the year so far), and sample the rest at the producers myspace, it'll be in the shops in March. Think Rub'n Tug meets Yacht Rock with a touch of Aussie attitude!

Right on, Kung Fu Man...
Master Po - Kung Fu Man (Mandarin Dream 2) Honey Dipped 1994
Spoken word eastern mystic philosophy? Jazzy deep house beats and guitars? Tweaking acid outro? Oh yes, all the ingredients for a back room classic I reckon. Another gem from the short lived, but very funky Honey Dipped label, try and find a copy of their '95 'Welcome to the Land of the Honey Dipped' compilation if this track works for you. I've no idea about the bands and producers current projects, thinks the label boss was called Eddie Love Chocolate (!), any updates on the back of ten pound note to the usual address, enjoy.

Contageous Balearia?
Organik - Dillusions (Honey Dipped 1995)
Some real slo-mo, chilled psychedelia here; always been an after hours secret weapon for me, but is it Balearic? Who's to say, but the renaissance (did it ever go away?) of the anything goes aesthetic we've been enjoying over the last couple of year has come under the broadsheet spotlight this week.
Justin Quirk's piece in the Guardian revisits such Balearic icons as Danny Rampling, Chris Rea, Boy's Own and the classic 'Short Film About Chilling', as well as some other familar faces like Balearic Mike and of course Mountain of One. He's positive about the 'scene' and spot on in many ways; Balearic as the melodic flipside to wonky K-fuelled minimal and also suggesting that it's a logical response from those jaded by big room corporate clubbing. Some might fear a bandwagon being built, or a specialist niche going mainstream. Me? I can't hear Map of Africa or Quiet Village being played in Topshop any day soon, roll on summer!
Jezebel
David Byrne & Brian Eno - The Jezebel Spirit
Just had to follow MJs post up with one of the best from the Byrne/Eno creative collaborations.
This is so good for so many reasons. A pre-sampler recording of a real exorcism, experimental electronics, and first hearing it as a teenager in a french disco, off my head, and it literally sending electricity down my spine. The recent remaster sounds crisp, but all the spooky atmosphere resides in the original version.
To top it all, the book by Amos Tutuola that inspired the title of the unique album 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' is a surreal masterpiece.
Thanks for cue-ing this one up for me...

Punchdrunk
Born Under Punches - Fuzz Against Junk (Harvey's Punchdrunk Remix)
Posted this excellent track in our recent Innersounds interview, it's an old Nuphonic release, FAJ covering the old Talking Heads classic, got all the right ingredients for us; David Byrne/Brian Eno and of course a long dubbed out Harvey remix with loads of distorted guitars and spacey percussion, think Ashley Beedle had a hand in this too, great stuff.
And just for fun...KPM - Theme from Superstars proper anything goes stuff, an anthem from our old ‘ou est the poulet?’ club night, will probably wind up the purists which is always a bonus…

All My Friends at Once
Dinosaur L - Go Bang
Classic Arthur Russell/Francois Kervorkian slab of early '80's mutant disco, much sampled (check Todd Terry's 'Bango' and others) and much loved. This disco-not-disco opus provides the name and maybe some of the inspiration for a month long discoid festival in Brighton which the NFP is proud to support and be playing at.
The Brighton disco/balearic rennaisance gathers pace this spring with new nights and venues appearing almost weekly, with new and established names injecting an alternative soundtrack to the south coast's most hedonistic city. Go Bang! is a month of events throughout May, that could set the scene for a summer of classic parties and cracking music. Check the festival's Myspace for a full details of venues and DJ's.
Nfp's own Leon C & Mellow Jonny will be play two events on Saturday 10th May; @ The Sidewinder, Brighton, 3pm till 8pm for an outdoor Balearic session and a late night party @ The Three and Ten, Brighton. It's a long way off I know, but one for the diary. Thanks to Go Bang! and Broadcast Loft Party promoter Ali for all his energy and enthusiasm for all things disco.

The Past Sound of London
The Future Sound of London - While Others Cry (1991)
Still on the balearic goodness trail, its easy to forget just how fresh this sounded back in the day (some 17 years ago...)
Starting off as Stakker, with Humanoid, FSOL weaved a merry path through acid house, ambient, trip-hop and rock, all under the guise of internet cowboys (ISDN anyone?) only to emerge in 2005 with the acid-baked sonics of Alice in Ultraland (fittingly released on 1970s psychedelic label Harvest).
Accelerator in the meantime, FSOL's first release in 1991, seems to have stood the test of time better than anything else.

We Are Miami Vice...
Code 61 - Drop the Deal (1988 ffrr)
Next installment of vintage Balearic goodness from the legendary ffrr album. This track of classic Belgian New beat was produced by Renaat & Sabine who went on to set up the famous techno label R&S. Sampling Miami Vice and the Pope to great effect, this twenty year old track sounds pretty righteous I'd say.
"Chico Areola has been struck by the pelota, please remain in your seats" (?!)

Supermax - Lovemachine (1978)
This 20 year-old slice of German cosmic disco heaven did it for me in 2007; possibly more than any other tune.
Be sure not to miss this phenomenal appearance.
Happy 2008.

New Year Roundup #2
Noze - Remember Love
The next part of our roundup of what's been happening in blogland in '07 brings us to what has to be one of our fave out tracks of the year, from the very funky and slightly bonkers Noze, but don't just take our word for it; Kevvy K over at Dilated Choonz recently gave this the thumbs up in a very significant post, and Mr Carnage at Tape made it his track of the year. Check his top 100 post for a very comprehensive and clued up summary of the year in music, he sure does know his stuff.

Boom Chocka-Boom
280 West - Scattered Dreams ("Boom Chocka-Boom" Mix) 1992 Kaleidiascope
One of those tracks where one mix manages to transform a track from the routine to the anthemic; driving synths and percussion riding on a nagging acidic bassline. Over fifteen years old and still bouncing over genres and pigeon-holes; house, disco, acid, who cares when it's this funky? 280 West is deep house producer Mark Mendoza, buy his new stuff here.

Never Surrender...
Beats Workin' - Sure Beats Workin' ( it's a trip mix)
From the legendary 1988 ffrr album this great reworking of Area Code 615's Stone Fox Chase features harmonicas, buckets of piano and samples from Winston Churchill and Flintstones among others! Put together by London club legend Nicky Holloway and friends right at start of the Acid House scene. The buzz around the clubs at the time, like Holloway's Trip, Rampling's Shoom and Oakenfolds Land of Oz was huge, I'll leave it to Terry Farley's sleeve notes to give you a flavour; ( and I know it's twenty years on, but let's try to keep some of that feeling eh??)
"....loads of hugs and kisses ... smiley t-shirts and happy faces.... feeling saucey instead of sauced......eating fruits on the dance floor....bashed up converse trainers.....lovely girls with blinding accents.....ice pops.....hedonism....sparklers at the future....indian belly dancers at the shoom....almost everyone finally realising that "only love can conquer hate"....watching the sun set at the café del mar....watching the sun rise on primrose hill....the karma collective....poncho's pony tails and body paint....dj alfredo....new friendships....loads more hugs and kisses....just let this piece of warm anglo-ibizan club culture rush over you, enjoy it mateys!!! "
